    Jiwu Li

    Jiwu Li is a Professor of Cello and Doctoral Supervisor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (FRAM) in the United Kingdom, and Vice President of the String Society of the China Musicians Association.

    Graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in the UK, he has dedicated his career to cello performance and teaching. He was a prizewinner at the first Cello Performance Competition in China. He has cultivated a group of exceptional cello performance and teaching talents. His students, ranging from the affiliated primary school of the music academy to doctoral students, have won various awards in significant international and domestic competitions, including maintaining a consecutive first prize in the National Cello Competition sponsored by the original Ministry of Culture for three terms. They have also achieved first place in competitions such as the David Popper International Cello Competition, the Penderecki International Cello Competition in Poland, and the Rubinstein International Music Competition.

    In 2004, he was awarded the Best Tutor Award in the National Cello Competition by the Ministry of Culture. In 2013, he was honoured as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (FRAM), an award limited to 300 outstanding musicians worldwide. In 2014, he led the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s “International First-Class String Performance Talent Training” project, which won the second prize of National Teaching Achievement by the Ministry of Education and the Special Prize of Shanghai Teaching Achievement by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In 2017, he was awarded the Baosteel Education Foundation Excellent Teacher Award, and in 2019, he received the title of National Outstanding Teacher awarded by the Ministry of Education.

    He has been invited to be a visiting professor at the Krakow Academy of Music in Poland, Texas Christian University in the USA, and the Royal Academy of Music in the UK, lecturing at renowned music academies in Europe and America. Since 2007, he has been a regular visiting lecturer at the prestigious Wells Cathedral School in the UK. He has been invited to perform or give masterclasses at events such as the Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary, Canada, the Edinburgh Festival in the UK, and the Tanglewood Music Festival in Boston, USA.

    He has served as a judge in events such as the China Music Golden Bell Award Cello Competition and String Piano Ensemble Competition, the National Cello Competition sponsored by the original Ministry of Culture, the International Cello Competition in Poland, the Rubinstein International Music Competition in Germany, and the TCU International Music Festival Competition in the USA. He is the Artistic Director of the National Youth Cello Art Week (Ningbo) and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Cello Music Festival.

    He has published more than ten academic research papers on cello and chamber music performance and teaching, and discipline and specialty construction. In 2013, the string performance art major of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, which he led, was approved by the Ministry of Education as the “National Professional Comprehensive Reform Pilot”.

    He has previously served as the Principal of the Attached Middle School of Xinghai Conservatory of Music and the Director of the Orchestra Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
